How to use Posts and Pages in WordPress Appropriately

WordPress always have 2 types of the option to create content. Posts and Pages.
When you want to add new contents, it would be a good idea to use them appropriately.

But How?

Generally, you should have known the difference between Posts and Pages in WordPress.

WordPress Posts

WordPress Pages

• Timely blog posts
• Have a publish date
• Have Format (e.g. Standard, Gallery, Link etc. like a Template)
• Categories (like a sub-folder)
• Tags (faster find relevance)
• Show Public Author
• Show the latest posts
• Display in RSS Feed
• Don’t have a publish date
• For static content (e.g. about, contact)
• Have Template (like a.. well yeah Template!)
• Have Parent (like a sub-folder)
• Have Order (for hierarchically)
• Don’t show Public Author
• Show static orders
• Don’t Display in RSS Feed

If the table above makes it hard for you to read then let me compare them in each function.

Comparison of functions for WordPress Pages and Posts

First, the Showing of a publish date. If you don’t want to have your reader know how old and un up to date your content is, go for Pages.

Second, If you want to use a template (want to make your content look different from the previous one in format), go for Pages.

Third,  If you want an automatic update in showing orderly  (e.g. Latest show first), go for Posts.

Fourth, If your site has many Authors and you want the Reader to know who writes them, go for Posts.

Similarly, If you want that shiny new content shows on RSS Feed, go for Posts.

Lastly, If you concerned about your URL (permalink structure), there is no big difference in that if you have Pages for each Child Pages.

It’s all come down for me to this. (Conclusion)

With Pages
– I create the main Pages for each Main Menu (eg. Home, App, Book)
– I also create the App Page for each application with Page. Because it has a static URL and unique propose in each Page.

With Posts
– In each main Pages, I drop a category of Post that respond to that Main Page. So it automatic update that Page. This makes it looks updated not too dry and not have to manually update it each time you write new content.

So at first, I build some Main Pages according to my Site Structure.
After I got a solid foundation, I lay each main Pages with Posts relate to those main Pages.

I make this article to clear a confusion me and keep me the right direction.
